I take it that you aren't one of us whom chronically suffers from bouts of depression. That is a good thing. I will tell you from my own personal accounts of depression and I hope it may help answer some of your questions. Depression comes on silently. You barely even notice a change in mood or a shift in your mental balance approaching untill the depression state is full blown. Except for maybe a feeling of being a little under the weather sort of, there isn't always obvious warning signs that precede the depression. There are often subtle tell tale signs that an imbalance is begining to take its spin out of controll though. For some, I am one , people prone to depression become more sensitive or "thin skinned" and overly emotional just befor the depression sets in. The simplest upset can trigger a full episode of depression. Also, there is usually a decreased interest in once enjoyed activities and a subtle neglect to personal appearance, hygene and social functions. In addition, those who suffer depression avoid people, situations that over load them and don't eat properly or sleep well/sleep too much. Id say the most obvious sign that depression has set in is when a person goes into what I call total avoidance. Everything and anything can be too overwhelming at this stage of depression. Deression for me always requires medication, therapy and rest. Loved ones would fare well not to tell someone to "snap out of it" it can't be done....It takes time, patience, willingness to respect ones needs and help with those needs and most of all, it takes a lot of love. Show the person who is suffering from depression that you are certain that all will be okay and that relief from the melancholy mood and feelings of hopeless and helplessness will pass. I hope this helped to inform you more about depression.

when i get depressed i try to get out of it as quick as possible. I pray and look inward to see why I am feeling blue. I am pretty much a hermit anyway so I dont go out with friends. If at all possible I try to sit in the sunshine a little while and bask in the nature of God's glory. I also enjoy reading a good book to help change my thought pattern. Then there are sometimes when I just want to feel sorry for myself but I try not to make those times last for more than a couple of hours. Life is really to short to have to be a slave to depression. You can overcome it but it is a hard road sometimes. Getting closer to God has really been helpful to me.

Try getting out of your comfort zone. Talk to someone about why you are depressed. Try taking up a hobby. For example exercise as it releases happy hormones into the body (chocolate does the same thing). Sport is also a good way to meet new people because you have a common interest with them. I believe that you can pull yourself out of depression quickly as it is a state of mind. There are certain conditions of the body that means you feel depression due to a inbalance in hormones. IF in doubt seek a doctors opinion.

Depression is something that is common and unique at the same time. I think while the traits of depression are seen in everyone that suffers them I think how they manifest themselves in each person is different. I have found that finding the right medication has helped me greatly. My wife can attest to that trust me!! ;-) Finding the right one really made me feel a lot more free. You get chained down by those needs of isolation and desperation without even knowing it. I had BIG time issues with anger and learning how to cope with that combined with a little personal searching has improved my life soo much. It is not a quick fix nor should it be. Take your time and you can get away from it no problem. Good luck. :-)

Most of the time... I just let my emotions out. One of the ways is journal writing, blogging or even calling up a friend. I like spending time alone when I'm depressed though. I switch off my cellphone & just stay in my room.
After a couple of hours alone (the max) I start to sort out my thoughts. Go through my goals & I'm back on my feet again. There's no point worrying about stuff you can't do anything about, it will eventually sort itself out :)
Depression makes you think the worst of yourself & the situation. At times, It might not be as bad as you imagine it to be. Take things one step at a time. We're not perfect, only human :)

big difference between clinical depression and getting the blues and being down and in a funk. People who are depressed meet certain criteria over a period of several weeks and hopfully try to seek out a professional to talk to, like a psychologist.
