Have a friend going in for minor surgery but he'll be in hospital for a few days. Anybody recommend some books he might want to read - he's not really a TV fan and he wont have access to DVD so it's just books unfortunately. He reads various things as long as it's not Sci-Fi. New releases very welcome!

All suggestions really good, but he's not really into crime/romance, stuff that's political but funny are his thing. He's a bit picky actually.

Erm, sorry probably should mention that he's read all of the following already -
Catcher in the rye, clockwork orange, harry potter, most of hemingway, and graham greene - so maybe stuff that's similar? Cheers

It's not at all funny, but it's very political. Cancer Ward by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
A book that is funny and I suppose kind of political: A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

TOM CLANCY BOOKS!!!!!
I was stuck in the hospital for 3 months after I took a few bullets while in Afghanistan. I might just like these books because I'm a soldier but alot of my non-military friends enjoy them also. Tell him to try the following books:
Without Remorse
Clear and Present Danger
The Sum of All Fears
Teeth Of The Tiger
Rainbow Six

The Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. At 1024 pages long, you can't get any more epic than that. To top things off, it traces the life of a young Southern woman Scarlett O'Hara in the time of the American Civil War. A rip-roaring read for sure, had me hooked from the very first chapter.
If your friend can't stand female protagonists, try Flowers for Algernon on him. Sad, heart-rending, and thought-provoking, with a male main character.
Another male-protagonist novel is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - good (I'm reading it right now), AND it's quality literature. The story - cynical 16-year-old Holden Caulfield escapes from prep school and flees to the Big Apple, where he has a grand old time hanging out in bars, etc.
Since your friend is in a hospital, how about letting him try Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms? It's about an ambulance driver in WWI and his relationship with an English nurse. Tragic and profound, if that's the kind of thing your friend likes.
Gordon Korman's Son of the Mob is funny, though targeted at teens (but I read it in middle school). The story - a mobster's son tries to get a girlfriend, can't, gets one, and finds out something about her that forces him to conceal his father's occupation, but of course his plans go awry. Try it on your friend if he likes that sort of thing.
Hope this helped!

A copy of the Assassin's Cloak may go down well. I know it's not fiction, but snippets from famous, dead people's diaries.....BUT the avantage is it is short pieces and can be dipped into at random, cos if your friend is having an operation he won't be able to concentrate properly at first ..after op..And it won't matter if he doesn't finish it. Also...you can probably get a copy from a second-hand bookshop in good condition.
Other than that, I would recommend light reading, nothing too heavy. Tom Holt's books are very funny, but may not be to your friend's taste.

Magazines are usually better while in hospital because it is not so easy to concentrate and therefore short stories or articles are more suitable. Crossword and puzzle books are excellent too and jigsaws can help pass away the time.
