Our council does send plastic bottles on boats to China, but the boats in question have dropped off Chinese imports and are sailing back to China anyway and would otherwise be empty, so it's not as bad and the sensationalists would have you believe.
I think it's all a question of economics because China can process things more cheaply due to lower cost of labour, no health and safety legislations etc. Councils do not recycle everything that is recyclable, only the items where they can make money.

some roads in basic terms have 2 or 3 homes in them, so it is no longer financially attainable for some councils - noticeably the agricultural ones - the line I stay in is unquestionably over a mile long and in basic terms has 7 homes in it, AND is divided between 2 councils. some refuse/dustbin men will %. the recycling up on the comparable time because of the fact the time-honored rubbish collections. some people take their recycling - newspapers/glass - to the food market with them whilst they circulate to do their grocery finding out to purchase.

Considering the bin persons in my area tip all the carefully sorted different recycling boxes into one big bin therefore mixing it up I would suggest it goes on the slow boat to China

Recycling is a lie. Yes they put it on a boat but they also come back with an empty boat. You add it up.

There is a very active recycling industry in China, the only problem is that it may not be very eco-sound. However, it is recycling.....

Who's knows what the councils get up to, what they're supposed to do and what they do are two different things.
