Taking the pill at the same time each day makes it more effective — pick a time of day that is easy to remember.

If you start the combination pill within five days after the start of your period, take the first active pill of the first pack. You will not need to use a back up method of birth control. You are protected against pregnancy immediately.

If you start the combination pill at any other time during your menstrual cycle, take the first active pill of the first pack. Use another method of birth control if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week of combination pill use — protection will begin after seven days.

You may start the progestin-only pill at any time. Use another method of birth control if you have vaginal intercourse during the first 48 hours of progestin-pill use — protection will begin after two days.

Taking the progestin-only pill at the same time each day is essential — if you take it more than three hours past the regular time, you need to use a back up method of birth control for 48 hours after taking the late pill.

Please read the info that comes with your pills or look on their website for their patient prescribing info or read the link below. It will verify this.

About a month for the pill to kick in effectively, and up to three months for her system to get back on track.
Might I add in...I think its great that you're in love, how wonderful for the two of you. But I got pregnant with my first child while on the pill. Of course I love her and wouldn't give her up for anything, but that totally wasn't planned and it put quite a hardship on me for a while. We're ok now, but all I'm saying is you two should be smart. No birth control method is 100% effective, and not everyone takes it correctly. If you're not going to listen to me about this, atleast make sure all directions for the contraceptive are being used exactly the way they say to. That will atleast help decrease your chances of an unwanted pregnancy.

It takes about a month for the pill to work it's way into your girlfriends system. But she has to be diligent about it. Take it at the same time everyday and don't miss a pill. If she does you need to use a condom. Hope this helped.

about a month to 5 weeks. also if she is on antibotics you have to wait the month again. But no birth control is 100% even if taken correctly (which only about 85% of the population does). All three of mine were conceived while i was on 3 different birth control products.
