Car engines typically can't run on petrol containing more than about 5% ethanol without voiding their warranties, but most engines can in principle cope with even higher percentages. The point of adding ethanol is that it is a renewable fuel- being made by fermentation of biomass. Obviously, the more ethanol in a gallon of fuel, the less petrol, but the cars performance is not affected. Thus you can effectively travel a given distance with less petrol, which is advantageous from an environmental viewpoint, and economically advantageous to a country such as Brazil, whose access to crude oil is limited.

I will star this question and watch the answers as it is the same in our country...they used to only add 10% to our petrol, now I believe it is as much as 20%....It was also proven here that Ethanol was doing major damage to car engines, but the govt. continue to allow its use in our cars, in fact they have gone on to say now that Ethanol doesn't do any damage at all......so who, or what to believe??.....a scientist might be helpful in getting to the truth.....good question and thankx...
