Im 17 and im thinking of getting a lip piercing done. I'm just curious to how painful and how long it'll take to heal. I'm also going to a local university that has rules on piercings, would it be hard for me to take it off and put it back during nights?

I'm gonna try to answer your questions one at a time.

1. With your lip piercing, you'll just want to wash it with Bactine or liquid Dial soap about twice a day. If it gets too dry, bring it down to once a day. You can also do sea salt soaks, but it may not be necessary. It'll be swollen for a few weeks and crust over--that is normal and necessary. DO NOT pick at the piercing, put on Neosporin or any kind of alochol.

2. Yes it hurts. It was actually the most painful piercing I ever got. But it was also my favorite. Your deicision.

3. No, it won't bother you when you eat, but if you tend to play with things, be aware that your healing time will be increased by how much you touch it. I never touch my piercings with my hands, but I tended to tongue it all the time and it took forever to heal.

4. As I said, the time to heal can vary on how much you play with it, but also how quickly your body heals. After about 2 months it completely healed with no swelling at all for me. Other people it is faster and others it is slower.

5. I took my lip ring out after almost two years and after about two hours it was pretty much closed up. You're not going to be able to take it in and out like that unless you put in a retainer (a clear plastic thing), but you can usually still see those. It is never recommended that you do that though since it irritates the piercing and you can bring in any kind of bacteria each time you do that. If your Uni has rules against things like that, go for a hidden piercing and get your lip done once you're gone. You really do not want to go through all that pain and money just to take it out immediately (which is really bad for piercings too).

I had one. It wasn't painful at all to get it done, and only took a couple of weeks or so to heal, but everybody's different. I don't recommend taking it out during the day though, because unlike earrings, even after it's healed, your lip piercing can start to grow up even if you just leave it out a few hours (and it hurts like hell to get it back in). Instead wear a retainer so it's less noticeable.

My ex had it done, and it bled like hell when he slept. he would wake up covered in blood if he slept on that side. Apparently it hurts alot too. looks good when done though. Also think about where your having it done. if its in the middle you can get problems with your gums. Also go to a good piercing shop. Ask around for recommendations
