It always puzzles, me......why should traffic pollice, turn on thier sirens when in pursuit of a criminal/traffic jumper/highflyer??

I mean...they could spot the suspect/criminal and then organise a trap and then WHAN!!!....I mean WHAM!! the suspect or the bad dude is handcuffed.

Suspects/Bad dudes always speed up more and sometimes get a chance to outdo the traffice police guys...^_^

So.....I was just curious...^_^

It's for public safety. By using lights and sirens they are warning the rest of the public that there is a situation going on so they can stay clear of the area.

Although someone running from the police is a threat to public safety, police would also contribute to that danger by not using lights and sirens. The first priority for law enforcement is to protect the public not endanger them.

Lastly, by using lights and sirens a criminal is aware that they are being pursued, that way they can't go to court and say they had no idea that was a cop behind them.

Police turn on their sirens only when they are pursuing someone who already knows they are there.

Many times they arrive at a crime scene silently so as not to tip off the suspects.

When the use sirens they blare them for two reasons:
1. To alert the public to stay out of their way when in a chase.

2. To alert someone (like a traffic offender) to pull over.

In both of these instances the element of surprise is not important.

What if people are in danger? If like some criminals are robbing a house by gunpoint. Its not fair to the people in the house to be used as bait. The cops need to let the criminals know they are coming so they leave instead of hurting people. Thats my guess anyways.

They do it to warn other road users of the danger. Not to mention it is a psycholgical tool - a siren creates fear.
