There was an embargo in 1972. There really has been no shortage since then other than Katrina. What we do have is a situation where we buy our oil from somewhat hostile sources and growing demand in other countries also. We do consume the largest percentage of oil.

I try to buy vehicles that are efficient as possible but like so many others I can't afford to buy new so your never really sure what you are getting. America loves powerful vehicles. We really need to change that but it is a personal choice. Rising fuel costs most certainly will do what all the logic in the world won't.

The tax breaks on the SUVs were an attempt to help U.S. auto builders to earn enough profit to keep operating. It didn't help a lot now foreign manufacturers are offering the same type of vehicles at a cheaper price.

Actually the government doesn't support the gas hogs.

I believe it was during the Clinton years that they started leveling a large gas guzzler tax on cars that don't meet milage standards and they required major manufacturers to meet fleet standards. During the Bush years the milage has been required to increase to meet standards.

Both Presidents were vigilant in this matter. But the American people have an attitude of if I want it I am going to buy it regardless of tax or gas milage.

I am guilty also (Crew Cab Silverado 4X4)

Um because we like the market and not laws to drive the decision. We are a free people. There is no gas shortage. If it costs more the rich still drive fast cars and the poor make ways to get the gas. Varooom !!!

Selfishness. And the government doesn't support it. The auto manufacturers build them and ppl buy them. Free market.

Feelings of inadequacy lead people to overcome their lack of sexual power and money power to compensate by purchasing a large vehicle.....They think it makes them powerful...and sexy.

Nothing else makes any sense...unless you live in a wilderness area and actually need a large vehicle to get around.

Feel sorry for them......

Good question.....I could barely drive over 30mph where I live. If you do there is a police car waiting with his handy dandy radar gun!

Because we are independent entrepreneurs. I'm always hauling and building stuff.

Because we are selfish wasteful pigs. Everything here is a status symbol and you are judged by it. Our houses are up to 350,000$ and use enormous amounts of energy. But the prices are coming down because our fuel bills are going up and we have to file bankruptcy.

Because the oil industry told them too.
