It is neither Oxford or Cambridge - the best university in the world is (drum roll please) is Harvard University. However, the best UK schools are the following in order:
University of Cambridge
University of Oxford
Bristol
Warwick
London, Imperial
Sheffield
Southampton
London, UCL
Edinburgh
York

i dont think there is such a thing as the best university in the world. however there are some very popular and well respected ones such as the ones the answerers before me mentioned.
In the US Harvard would be the top top. In England I guess it will be Oxford.

Harvard seems to be the best in the world according to this survey with Cambridge and Oxford coming up in second and thrid place. gold, silver and bronze medals.haha

It depends. There are faculties where Oxford is better than Cambridge. There are faculties where Cambridge is better than Oxford. There are faculties where other universities are better.
And even when you compare by faculty you might get different results depending on your criteria:
* quality of research
* quality of education
* price in relation to quality of education
* influence of alumni in their chosen field
* average salary and position of alumni after 1/5/10 years
Just to name a few criteria.
