What is Ebonics? A dialect spoken by a minority of Americans. There are millions of people around the world who have never heard it,or never heard of it. Many Canadians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, New Zealanders, Pacific Islanders, Australians, British people and other Americans speak a more-or-less mutually intelligible form of English and do not use Ebonics. So I would not worry too much. It is fashionable among some people but will probably be forgotten in twenty years time. It might even enrich the language in the meantime.

neb,

I don't think so. The slang/vernacular prevalent in 'ebonics' is not recognized in the seats of power, be it in a CEO's office of Fortune 500 companies or those in political power.

The rules of English have changed very little in the past 100 years despite the industrial revolution and all the 'new terms' that get invented every ten years or so. One need not look very hard here on Yahoo! Answers to see abbreviated, chopped-up words and atrocious grammar...I guarantee that those people do not spell like that on their college term papers or on memorandums at work.

Let's face it...when it comes to speaking a certain way and choosing between it and making a good living, folks choose (wisely) to speak proper English and make a decent wage.

When America broke ties with the Queen in the 1700s, we kept the English language. However separated by the vast body of water between us and the slow pace of communications of the times, our languages grew apart. I am sure that the English you speek today is not that of the 1700s.

Eubonics is a product of mostly poor, mostly black ghetto neighborhoods.....it is not widespread in the general population.

My theory is if you talk like a slave, you will be treated like one. A person is judged by how he presents himself through actions, dress and speech.

Its becomming more and more rare to find a person who speaks or writes for that matter, proper english. A lot of people are using "gangster" slang and such. Sad, but true...it irritates me when I hear people saying things such as, "she dont like me no more" when you should be saying, "she doesn't like me anymore"
