The swastika is basically an Aryan symbol symbolising cosmic energy. As the Aryans migrated from middle-central asia towards India, Africa and Europe, the symbol can be seen in artifacts of those regions.
In India the swastika got incorporated in the Hindu religion, it is also a part of Buddhism iconography and it's use is widespread across the Far East.
The Nazi swastika is rotated anticlockwise by 45 degrees and this it is believed contributed to it's use as an symbol of evil.

It is an Arian symbol, means "Holy Sun in rolling on the Sky". There are many swastikas in Macedonia, too, dated from early Roman times, when the Cult of Mithra was present in Macedonia.

Early Christians used the Swastika as a symbol for good luck - they were rather wide-spread with their attempt at converting the world to their religion, so it would be no surprise if their symbolism moved along with their religion.

Probably swastica was , as a lot of other signs(like camuna rose, circles, spirals...), in origin a symbol of the sun in Neolithic, then a hindi symbol.
Note that Nazi had some research missions in the zone of Tibet etc. because they considered that zone to be special for mistic reasons, and note that in the hindo(river) valley centuries(about 2000 b.c. if i remember well) ago settled a population arriving from north, they became the top class of their zone, they writed in a language called sanskrit(in sanskrit "svastikah" means "be lucky/good luck"), and they were called Aryans.
This name(Aryans) is not really related with nazi's race teories, they defined themselves arians, but this has a different origine. In fact Aryan in europe takes it's origine from a monk called Ario, that diffused Cristianesim into the northern regions of europe, but he diffused one of the first heresy, because in Ario's version christ was not divine but only a man becase for northern population was not concepible a dying God. So these christians that followed the heresy of Ario were called Aryans(the spelling is the same of the Indian population, but there is no relation).
But swasticas were used almost all over the world by different populations, the symbol could be found in ancient german populations that called it "Thor cross", in fact nazis used this because was full-german name .
In Great Britain scandinavians settlers introduced this symbol, the same symbol could be found in an Ebraic temple 2000 years ago
Also american natives(north, centre and south america) had this symbol in their tradition, but north american natives cancelled this symbol from their traditions during the WW2
In chinese tradition it's the symbol of eternal flow of things of universe.
