I've read the opinions here, and that is what they are: personal opinions. Opinions and facts rarely meet, too.
Here are some resources that tell the real story:
Today's Alternative Marriage Styles: The Case of Swingers http://www.ejhs.org/volume3/swing/body.htm
and
The Swingers Board http://www.swingersboard.com
The first is an actual academic study done on swingers and the swinging lifestyle. The second is an online forum for swingers. You can hear the truth right from the horse's mouth.
As a short answer though: All kinds of people are swingers. They come from all social and economic backgrounds, race and religions. The one common thread with all swingers is that they interested in exploring their sexual fantasies within their relationship (as opposed to deception and cheating) and they are honest and open with each other, and they tend to communicate better then the average couple.
Swinging isn't about replacement sex, it's about additional sex. It's people that are secure in themselves (meaning not insecure and thus jealous), in their spouse, their relationship, and in their sexuality. It's people that love the idea of their spouse having fun and a great time as they are about themselves having a great time. They help their spouse realize their sexual fantasies while they realize their own.
A common misconception from the outside (propagated by the porn industry) is that swinging is a 24/7 orgy and that swingers will have sex with anyone. Nothing is further from the truth. Most swingers swing only once a month or so, and it isn't with just anyone. In fact, you could live next door to a swinger couple for 20 years and never know that they are. They just don't try to have sex with everyone. Swinging isn't their life, it's just a part of it. It's sexual fun they engage in together once in awhile.
I think most swingers will tell you also that it is less about the sex and more about the social aspect of the lifestyle. The parties with other like-minded adults, the openness, the sexually-charged atmosphere. Sex is just the icing on the cake. And that's all it is, sex between consenting adults.
It's not for everyone, obviously. But for those that do it, and do it successfully, it works very, very well.

It isn't for everyone, and those that choose it are usually in one of two places with it: they are happy and well adjusted with it, or one partner feels somewhat forced into it and is unhappy to be sharing something so intimate. There are general guidlines usually set up between couples/singles to make everyone feel comfortable. I myself am not into the swinger liefestlye but have known a few friends that were, myeslf am in a diffrent lifestyle...
