People kind of believe this because the avatar is the only impression you have of that person, its psychological.
I worked for a firm for a year once and got promoted to foreman, all I had to do was keep the office informed of who was turning up for work that day. We only ever spoke on the phone, when we finally met we all got the shock of our lives, because voices were the only impression we had of each other.

My avatar has the *look* of me but obviously it isn't a photographic reproduction. I like to think other Yahoo! users have the decency to create one that at least looks a bit like them.
