Believing that tv drama progs are somwhat LOOSELY based on facts, and having watched the US tv series Numbers tv programme recently, I wondered whether numbers can REALLY help, or actually solve crimes, have created the right formula based on the evidence to hand?

It can!
Maths is language. The way we interpret it determines our conclussions.
Apart from numbers I have also seen in Threat Matrix the use of math being applied.

I think that using math to determine from what angle a bullet made impact, for example, could be instrumental to solving a real case.

yes.

Here in the Netherlands there is a nurse accused from murder on elderly people.

She is accused because elderly people died unexpected when she was on duty.

She is accused based on statistics.

A mathematician has calculated the probility that a nurse was on duty and that someone died. The probability for the accused nurse where not higher than for not-accused nurses.
a reinvestigation is needed.
