With auto boxes, faults can be major or something simple. Have you checked the fluid levels in the box, does it smell?. It more than likely needs replacing. It could also be a electrical fault causing it to stick. Automatic boxes are not stressed when driven normally, so I would be surprised if it needs a major overhaul.
I would ring around the Yellow Pages and the Toyota Car Club for advice.www.toyotaownersclub.com. Cheer up, I bet it is not major, and if it is, replace box.

To be honest, it sounds like your "new" gearbox is knackered, but first of all take it to an automatic transmission specialist for a verdict. They'd know far more about it, try Yellow Pages.
