Engine has done 27000. Smoke is blueish grey when revved hard on start up. When running smoke only visible if engine revved stationary but looks black. Exhaust emissions tested and ok. No loss of power when driving. Have been told I need a new engine. Does this sound right? Would a stop smoke additive help? My garage have basically said trade it in! Help! This is only a 52 reg car!

The garage has reccomended me to part-ex the car and have not tried to persuade me to replace the engine so they have nothing to gain by the advice given..they do not sell cars! There is also oil in the plugs. Any ideas?

oil draining down valve guides overnight and causing blue smoke on start up would not cause oiled up plugs. valve guide wear highly unlikely at stated mileage. it's either been overheated or an old engine or s/h head has been fitted. does engine number corrispond with V5. check valves. compression test cylinder leakage test to asertain engines condition.

Do you have to top up the oil a lot? If not, nothing to worry about. Revving hard on startup isn't kind on the engine, but a little smoke is to be expected if you do this. A lot of blue smoke can mean oil has probably leaked past the valve guides while the engine's been sat idle.
I should go to another garage if you're worried - yours clearly sees you as a mug!

if you dont want to change motors at this time, use smoke-b-gone or no-smoke.but it sounds like you got bad rings.
