Noise is just an idea in your mind.

The real question is does the tree even exist if there is no one there to see it.

This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.

This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.

At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.

We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.

These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.

From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.

I hope that helps to answered your question.

Love and blessings Don

The question is flawed:

If no one is around, can a tree fall?

Without the witness, there is no telling if the tree fell. There is only evidence of the tree falling to help us assume that the tree fell. But then, why would we be worried about it making a noise if we aren't even sure it fell?

Sounds silly, but more true than there being a noise.

No, it does not. The fact that we 'hear' anything at all is due to the impact. It is a rippling shockwave that we perceive as sound, which means are ears and brain have processed it to be sound for us. The tree did not make the sound, our ears did. If no ears, no sound.
Furthermore, if a photon of light strikes the ground, there is an impact, but it is definitely beyond the range of human hearing. It too would technically be making a sound, if our ears could perceive it. However, when's the last time anyone heard a ray of sunlight?
Again, if there are no ears that can perceive it, there is no sound.
That's my two cents for ya.

I will absolutely answer your question. You can't say, "if there is no one around to hear it". That is impossible. If you insist upon asking the question, it only refers to itself and not to reality in general. There is always someone around, (in the entirety of creation) even if one is not presently aware and conscious of that fact. I assume that you meant, " when there is no one around on Earth to hear the tree falling" when you posed this question. You did not say, "throughout the entire universe and everything else", and that is the scope I am talking about. The falling tree creates a ripple upon the spacetime continuum that is eventually "heard" by somebody somewhere, even if no person is in immediate proximity on earth to hear it. Ultimately, the divine creator hears it, and therefore we all hear it because we are all connected. You if listen to the silence you can hear it too. You can listen to the sounds all the falling trees have made for millennia....

There is always a witness.

When one is around to hear the tree fall; it makes a noise. When no one is around to hear it; there is no noise.

depends on how you define noise. the event definitely does create sound or vibrations of air particles and the answer would be yes. but if you define noise as a psychological reaction to sound, then no, it doesn't.

but, the real question is, if a tree falls on a mime in the forrest, does anyone care?

It makes a noise, but nobody can hear it.The only noise this fallen tree will make is if you go out into the woods and trip over it,the cursing might be heard for miles!!.

Of course it does! Nobody needs to hear something for it to make a noise. Thats just like asking if a blind woman faints will anybody see her?

Of course.. even a tiny needle falls will certainly make a noise, only is it audible to the ears or not..

yes it does make a noise, noise is vibrations so it still makes those vibrations when it falls but there are no ears around to transfer it to noise so no one hears it.
