Well, anyone can be a church. Whether it is a building where people of any religion congregate or to a group of people who do not believe in worshipping within structures. There are many churches and many denominations.

I guess the "mainstream" definition of church is the main religions (ie christian, catholic etc)

Perhaps the church is organised and structured religion?

One example of a church is the Metropolitan Communtiy Church. Metropolitan Community Church of Melbourne is part of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, with a special outreach to all who feel excluded, especially gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people. We serve among those seeking and celebrating the integration of their sexuality and spirituality.
They state that they are: Christians who uphold the ministry of love as taught by Jesus Christ.

Metropolitan Churches accept Jesus as our role model, and we preach Jesus' Gospel of love and acceptance.

Modern Biblical scholarship throws new light on the traditional “Texts of Terror” which have been used to condemn homosexuals and homosexuality.

Professor Virginia Mollenkott tells us to “Accept our sexuality as a gift from God, and then live it responsibly”. As our sexuality is from God, what right has anyone to make it a burden to us? Jesus didn’t! Don’t let anyone separate us from the love of God.

GLBTIQ people have been excluded and persecuted by parts of the Christian Church. The Gospels record that Jesus mixed with, accepted, and promoted the cause of those that the society of his time rejected and despised. Jesus lost favour with the religious leaders of his day because of his social justice and anti-discrimination stance. Jesus accepted all people.

The church (whatever church that may be) can act as a leader, or guide for young people. Many churches and the community within the church act as counsellors, and support (either emotiona; and spiritually, or through contributing programs for homeless and disadvantaged young people).
Here is a place where organised religion and the church as shown the real purpose of turning doctrine into action, leading by example, and by living the word of Jesus (or whatever prophet and whatever religion).

Where two or three are gathered in Christ's name (for real) there is the church. The role should be to become like Jesus, to live as He lived...it is hard, but nice...
