Toyota Corolla. It has been the best car from Toyota from last many decades. Last year in 2006 also it became the No.1 car in Japan. In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling car in the world. And it is a low fuel consumption car.

The two are quite differant in positioning and design. The Honda City is a great city car, with high seating, excellent fuel efficiency, a huge boot unmatched by anything in its or the Corolla's class, very comfortable seats, even for long distances.
The Corolla, on the other hand, is a performance car, with great speed, acceleration. It's milage is nowhere comparable to the city, but it is a stable reliable car with excellent highway manners. Both are good in maintainance, but Toyota parts are more expensive

Depends on viewpoint:
- If you go by Bangkok taxi drivers, Toyota Corolla is the best (99% of Bangkok taxis are Corollas). If that turns you off, serves you right - Corolla is the most boring car in the world, about as interesting as a bullock cart
- Honda City, especially the ZTEC Vx, is a far more exciting (and surprisingly cheaper) car than Corolla
- Though by the sheer numbers of old Corollas on the road worldwide, one can say "Corolla is longer-lasting". Of course, there is nothing to say that City isn't
- Internal comfort levels are the same
- Fuel efficiency is also the same more or less

Toyota Corolla, anywhere but in India!
I have owned 4 corollas 1973, 79, 80, 82, an 1989 pick up and a 2000 SUV, all Toyota's, I owned all the cars in the U.S. I had sworn never to buy anything but a Toyota. Then I bought 2003 corolla and 1996 4runner in India. It was a bad decision to say the least. Now after talking to other people I have realised that Toyota as a corporation is unable to compete in the Indian market and has given up on India.

A small change in your question ; it should be Honda civic and the toyota corolla . the city and the corolla are both fantastic cars to drive . city is very comfy and also has huge space . corolla has huge seats which give enough support to you . in the city city delivers you around 10 kmpl and on the highway it gives you around 16 kmpl . corolla gives you around 8 kmpl in the city and around 14 kmpl on the highway . The toyotas are well renowned for their mechanics .

Across the globe, Toyota and Honda are the leading sellers in cars. Hyundai is also becoming a leading car seller of late. However, if you prefer a car that has power and performance, you should be looking at a car outside these brands. Ford and GM provide powerful cars and Toyota and Honda provide cars that give you more mileage. Each of these cars have their own share of problems. On Indian roads, Mileage is a good option. If you are looking for Mileage and decent power in your car, you should be looking at a Skoda which gives you a decent 14-18KMPL on Highway. The performance is also great and it gives you good power. If you are open for other cars/SUVs, then you might want to look at Scorpio.

Corolla is better than city in many aspects.it is more powerful, has more space inside, equipmemt levels are higher.to top it off it is availble with good finance n discount schemes these days.only fuel efficiency(though very good considering the size of the car) is a bit lower than city.it returns 14kmpl to city's 16kmpl on highway.
