If getting in touch with your heritage is important, I'd say visit Turkey, because the entire time you are in Greece you are going to be thinking about how close you are to Turkey!

I've been to both and loved them for different reasons.
As an Aussie going to Turkey was very moving - especially visiting Gallipoli. I'm glad i went. The country is beautiful but Gallipoli is a must visit destination for every true aussie.
Greece was absolutely beautiful, i loved every minute of my time there, but Turkey (Gallipoli) moved me in a way that i never thought it would.

I've never been to either country, unfortunately. But I think I would feel more comfortable going to Greece. Turkey is an Islamic country, and as an American I would feel a bit anxious to go there. I'm sure both countries are great and have lots to offer.
