Personally I walk on the outside when I'm out with herself. It's some ingrained quaint habit of the man putting himself nearest the danger.

I usually walk by putting one foot in front of the other - this usually gets me to my destination

This is the following etiquette for how to walk
Sidewalks- sideways
Back streets- backwards
Footpaths-on your feet
Ringroads- round in circles
Hope that's right up your street.
