The guy's name is Loudon Wainwright III. He's an witty folk singer.
He is still performing, and is particularly popular in the UK.
He has NEVER been married to Julia Roberts. He was however once married to Kate McGarrigle, of the renowned folk duo The McGarriggle Sisters
He has had a number of small acting roles in various movies and TV shows, including MASH.
He is the dad of both Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright, who each have succesful singing careers.

You're after Loudon Wainwright. He was not married to Julia Roberts - the poster above is thinking of Lyle Lovett.

Oh, you people.
It's Loudon Wainwright III
There, now we finally have the correct spelling ;-)
He's Rufus (and Martha) Wainwright's father.
I've listened to his stuff and the only song I can say I really like is "Tip That Waitress."
Here is Rufus covering his dad's song (I love his version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQQ-oo1-jBE
He recorded/released WAY more than the prevoius poster claimed: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:egke4jj70waq~T2

Laudon Wainwright the third. Father of Rufus Wainright. Was married to Julia Roberts at one point. He also played Captain Spaulding on MASH for a few episodes during one of the early seasons. His presence on the show was, I think, more to showcase his musical abilites than his acting as I can only recall one or 2 scenes (O.R. scenes actually) where he didn't have his guitar and was playing and singing.
