Geesh, I thought I was in R&S when I read this question and some of the answers.
We are here to make the most of what we have and to help others. Diety manifests itself to the individual in the ways that individual is capable of understanding. It matters not what religion we choose or which Gods we serve as long as we harm none

I believe this is kind of a moral debate question. I have thought the same since I went vegetarian a few years ago, when a friend told me how if I am doing it for the suffering, well, everything is Alive so everything would suffer. Every living being, even plants themselves feed off something. I don't think anything ever really dies, it just transforms. Plants, we eat them alive, mushrooms are still alive, vegetables are still alive. Why do you think we can feed off things? The more natural and unprocessed they are the more energy we get. Why do you think so? Our bodies take the energy from the things we eat, because they are alive. We don't hear plants screaming or suffering, even though the fact they get burned at times, or damaged could be equaled to them suffering because they are dying. Animals scream, they get scared, they suffer. I believe it is normal for every being to go through suffering when something is not so appealing. Many people unfortunately, do not respect life as it is nowadays. That's why they kill anything excessively, carelessly... there's no conscience or awareness that life is everywhere, and it is to be respected, we are part of it! This discussion could go on forever, that is why I say that it is a debate that relies on the morals of each individual. I am a vegan now because it is my desicion to not consume things that involve or imply somehow animals going through what they do when they do not have to. I've eaten salmon thrice since I became vegan, which was recent. I have done it aware of what they go through to get to my plate, which hurts a little lot. I thank them lots, they know, but, I still know how awful it must be to stop breathing... still hurts, which is why I haven't eaten anymore lately. Death is part of Life, whether we accept it or not, but I believe it shouldn't be controlled by humans when someone or something dies, not even ants!! Even if I believe God is in us, it's still very hard for me to accept how stupidly influencial humankind thinks they are... I hate that humans can manipulate what goes on around them, I feel as if it should be nature who does that, not us. Anyhow, great question. Again, moral debate. Peace out and In! By the way, to the dude below me: WATER IS ALIVE!!!!! Do you think that for things to be alive they need to have eyes or ears, or a freaking nervious system!!?? How do you think something can REVIVE even at an almost-dying fase if it consumes water!!?? Ugh! Have your own criteria dude and be more informed.

Tough question to shape isn't it? Even with religious answers we seem left with little place in natural process. aside from breathing and eating.
Being at the top of the food chain doesn't answer any question for me except: What's for dinner? **Answer summary below.
As you note, every organism on the planet has a very specific symbiotic or parasitic relationship to one or more other organisms.
Of all the organisms on the planet, man seems almost unattached. Birds build nests, bears hibernate and beavers build dams; but this is nothing like the building of man once you step beyond caves, natural material shelter and animal hides.
Natural man or unnatural man?
My money says that human technology was and continues to be introduced by another type of being not completely native to the planet. I am not talking about little green men but seeders that were raised up with the population. Like the old movie "The boys from Brazil." not very high tech, but effective once done and very hard to spot.
Did you ever think that the people who want to get out of here are the people who did not belong here in the first place?
God is a god of variety. But there was a time when man controlled what was to be, before he fell into randomness and confusion.
**The real purpose of man and all living things is to express and glorify God. Man had a further purpose of tending the Garden where all this was to take place. Man's purpose is still to express and glorify God but his ability to do that from full being and in unison with himself and with nature has been lost.
Even those who say the story is a fable, claim that man has evolved to "tend" the world, to care for the planet to save what needs to be saved and guide what needs to be guided.

Life is a temporary euphoria brought on by a psychostimulating belief that your existance actually has some purpose. When in all reality the only purpose one serves in pretty much any case is to be a major annoyance to another being, whether you realize it or not. Chances are you don't even know you're annoying them nor do you probably know them at all. :)
*note* This was NOT directed at the asker persey, just a random thought that I come up with when I was, in fact, contemplating the meaning of life.

Growth = Evolving
the original source is an energy of consciousness.
Physics knows particles of consciousness are in all matter and in all space between matter....this is what is referred to the likeness of God the creator...All is Consciousness.
This consciousness is on a path of gathering awareness just for the sake of it.......That is what evolution is all about Growth because the Source wants to know all there is to know and once one particle knows all other particles of consciousness gain the same awareness. What is referred to as collective intelligence or the collective mind...all species have this.
Your are not human have a spiritual experience.
you are a spiritual/soul or consciousness having a human experience in density.

There is no real purpose. All creatures are too busy just trying to survive to wonder such things. Humans are smarter than the other creatures and because of this can live an easy life, not constantly fighting to survive. So, we have time to wonder and ask. At first our only purpose was to survive but since we have basically mastered that thanks to our modern society, now we have plenty of time to do other things. There really is no true purpose, just do whatever makes you happy.

We are living in geographic world in which each and evry speicies have there identified roles. And to make geograhical cycle to work smooth ,so there musnt be any global effect thats why every species is required.
To maintain the population growth there are therefore carnivores, herbivores and omnivores .So every living being is performing his or her duties in ther perspective roles whether it is a human being or whether its an insect.

To be honest with you I agree that there is a reason for everything, but I don't think we will know all those reasons in this life. I think those answers await us in our next life. We are not meant to know the answers to all things. You are lucky that you realize the small things lead to a bigger picture. Just appreciate what is around you and how it works, and go with the flow of how you feel life should be lived. Appreciate things to their fullest.
