It has good downloads to detect and eliminate
virus/trojans/spyware

There is no "best" program. The best thing to do is use at least 2-3 different clients to ensure maximum protection. Not all programs will detect the same thing, so what one program misses, the other(s) will pick up and vice versa.

if you like free programs that do the job you want, forever, use these two programs together. They both only require that you manually update the definition files before you scan.
SpyBot SD(Search n Destroy)
---specializes in zapping spyware
AdawareSE Personal Edition
---specializes in zapping the rest... including viruses :-)
Norton seems to work better than McCaffe

I like Kaspersky most ( http://www.kaspersky.com/ ) . It helped me remove an Adware that McAfee failed to remove.
But you also can try Avast and AVG.
