ok, just a little tip, learnt to swim before you go into the sea, even if u just learn to front crawl and keep urself afloat. If u dont kno how to swim nd get washed of a sandbar, ur pretty much fuked.

If i saw someone drowning i would be hesitant to help them. Drowning people panic and will do anyting to stay afloat even if that means pushing you under to do so. But im a strong swimmer so i mite go help somone in a pool or not too bad surf, except i grab them from behind by their wrists so they couldnt do nethin. So many people hav drowned trying to help others.

Hi Joe Cleo,

firstly, if you can't swim I would avoid being in the sea.

However, if you do find yourself in the sea and in danger of drowning there are some things you can do.

If you have been thrown into the sea from a wrecked boat or ship, look around for anything that could act as a bouyancy aid (chairs, flotation devices, empty plastic bottles, etc.)

If there are no such things within reach then relax and lie as still as you can on your back. Seawater supports the human body pretty well. If you have heavy items of clothing on, get rid of them (boots and such things) and lie there, floating, until you are rescued.

If you see sharks circling, then stay relaxed, they may not bother you...if they are particularly hungry, then it just wasn't your day, was it?

Stay safe,

BobSpain

BobSpain said it best!

As for have I seen this and have I saved someone, I have seen multiple rescues having lived on the beach my entire life. As a trained lifeguard I would be able to save a distressed swimmer or passive drowning victim using the skills I was taught.

However, on a scarier note, someone died on the swim while I was racing triathlon last year and no one noticed until he washed up on shore and didn't get up because there were so many people in the water...
