Since "Top Gear"'s relaunch in 2002 with Clarkson, May and the Hamster there have been two "Stigs". The first Stig wore a black racing suit and was known as "Black Stig". This Stig was played by F1 driver Perry McCarthy, who revealed his identity in his book "Flat Out, Flat Broke" and was then subsequently "killed off" at the start of series three when he was seen to drive very fast off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and not stop in time. Whether the two events are connected is unknown, but it is quite likely that the Top Gear producers were not happy at his revelation.

From this point onwards the new Stig wore white duds and was known as "White Stig". It is the identity of this newer Stig that remains shrouded in mystery. Many people believe that "White Stig" is not one particular F1 test driver but several, depending on who is available on any given day for filming. This theory is given added weight by the recent Winter Olympics special when the driver performing the ski-jump stunt, ostensibly "The Stig" was later revealed by local Swedish newspapers to be a local snowmobile cross driver. Various F1 drivers have appeared on the show in the "star in a reasonably priced car" segment, and all have denied being the Stig or evaded the question such as Damon Hill. The current theory as espoused by "Daily Express" is that F1 driver Julian Bailey is the Stig, but no-one really knows. That's the whole point!

The Stig was Perry McCarthy.A new Stig took over from McCarthy after the original Stig's "demise" at the beginning of Season 3.
On the 18 March 2006 the former Stig, Perry McCarthy, revealed that currently there is no one single test driver, but multiple test drivers who masquerade as the Stig;
Rumours have it that one of the new Stigs is Damon Hill and occasionally Colin McRae.
And in January 2006, the Daily Express claimed that the identity of The Stig is former Formula 1 driver Julian Bailey.
There's also rumours that one of the most frequent new Stig is Ben Collins and Julian Bailey.

They say it can be someone different every week. Some say it is even one of the presenters.

Notice you never see the Stig next to any of them or live on the show.

Its a retired race driver. Probably from touring cars as he takes different lines thru corners on the track than the formula one guys that come. Years and years ago Tiff Needell was a presenter on the show so it could be him. Unlikely tho coz he works on channel 5 now.
James May was on the radio yesterday saying there will be another series of Top Gear.
All Jeremy said was that it wont be back in summer. It usually starts its new series in the autumn. We only had the last one so late because of Hamsters accident
