If we carefully study and analyze history for the last 2500 years, we would note that from as early as the invasion period of Alexander (the so-called great) we had our ruling elite in the hands of scoundrels, mafias, and cunning brokers. It continues to be so till today, and may not change in the near future, except in the domination of the system by bigger mafias and more cunning brokers. One will not loose sight of the real reason for this pathetic "NATIONAL ETHOS" of SKULKING and purloining. It is essentially an out growth of the "PUBLIC ETHOS" of BLIND FAITH and HERO WORSHIP. The so-called PUBLIC or the society is tolerant, submissive and do not have a drive to achieve. It is due to these very reasons that we have been invaded by aliens from as early as 3000 years ago.

The British succeeded against their European neighbors' Colonization and plunder due to their better ethos. Whereas all other Colonial rulers were more concerned with only plundering, the British had a sense of "relative humaneness" that prompted them to create conditions of better living in almost all the Colonies they had annexed. This does not however mean that they did it out of benignity but that was merely to make THEIR lives better, while ruling the colonies. Obviously, many schemes and themes would create and effect certain modernization and betterment to a lot of the local community as well. And, incidentally, during the British rule (or at other times) NOT EVEN ONE IN A MILLION TRIED TO QUESTION THE DOMINATION of the foreigners over the locals. Instead, the elite communities in India were hand in glove with the rulers in assisting and plundering the local wealth and resources. Further, as our society had always been highly divided and disparate in nature, the invaders were creative enough to take advantage of such parochial tendencies in us towards furthering their own agenda -- offering some "crumbs" to the local "brokers".

Tipu Sultan was a different personality. He knew the designs of the British and wanted to "throw them out" of India. But again, this parochial and self-inflicting behavior of our local chieftains and community helped the British to consolidate their position, in spite of very stiff resistance from Tipu, who was "ditched" by his own ruling elite - the parochial and baser sense prevailing over the larger interest of the community. And, after Gandhi led India to FREEDOM, Jawaharlal Nehru valiantly attempted to change the national ethos, but he also could not change what had been set in all of us, for well over 2500 years!

Today, we continue to have this NATIONAL ETHOS and PUBLIC ETHOS still ingrained in the majority of us; not many attempting to make the required CHANGES to be different and to LEAD from the front. We talk of "latest technology", when all that we have are the "crumbs" thrown to us by the Westerners, through the "brokering" of our resources by those who rule and dictate our national priorities - whether it be Nuclear Science, Agriculture, the latest Special Economic Zones...etc. Our educated youngsters are sadly trained to be the STAFF and ASSISTANTS of the Western nations, to be subservient to their themes, goals and ethos. And all of our Universities and Centers of (so-called) Excellence train the youngsters NOT TO STUDY AND SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS BUT TO BE SUBSERVIENT TO THE WESTERN NATIONS. This writer DOES NOT WISH TO UNDERMINE THE WESTERN SOCIETIES NOR DENIGRATE THEM IN ANY WAY, BUT THESE ARE BEING PORTRAYED TO PRESENT THE SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY.
