Total chaos. People freak out when the power goes out for a couple of hours! The emergency services, hospitals would be the worst affected. As for national security I am not sure, but would think Police, National Guard etc. would have an affect on that.

Good Luck with your degree! Interesting question. Definately food for thought.

We used to have strikes by power workers in the UK in the 1970s. This led to industry working a three day week and an increased sense of community spirit given that there was no TV available. Candles were the only source of light in the evening. Interesting times :-)

i dont know about all of america but the first time i visited the states the power went of for 35hrs on the east coast and guess where i was? stuck in laguardia airport. that sucked. being in the dark in a strange place is pretty scary, but i must say the airport staff was great and helped were they could. funny thing is that no searched me or my bags after i got a flight and didnt even look at my id. id say that was a security threat, i could have been a baddie.

I live in the mountains of Tennessee and usually we have electricity, however, not many years back we had a blizzard and it was off for two weeks. I got my water from the spring above the house, ran it down with the water hose. I stoked up my wood stove and cooked all meals on it. My pantry was stocked with supplies as always. I used lanterns and candles for lites, kept refrigerated items in the snow bank in a plastic tub with a lid. had a blast. roads were all closed with downed lines and trees. got on my four wheeler and went to neighbors to make sure they didnt need anything and helped clear roads. We didnt get any trailers sent in from fema or help. we did it ourselves. its a southern thing.

well, i don't think the country would collapse after only 24 hours, but, my god...the garbage services alone could cause all sorts of mayhem...of course, i'm thinking, no power, no gas to run the trucks...etc.
