i mean yea, its ok i guess to dance to but its given way more credit that it deserves.

what makes it more popular than music that has instruments in it.

musicians will work on their skill and practice hard every day for years only to be medeoker, while rappers and hiphop artists have a pre planned song while pushing sum buttons on a computer, they dont even sing with a tone

i guarentee that jason becker(look him up!) or the human abstract, or yngwie malmsteen worked wayyyyyyy harder than any rapper in america, but only get about one tenth the credit of them, if that

what is it that makes talking to a beat so much better than music?

Man you got it all wrong. I am by no means into rap now days. Rap now days people sing about their bling, going to the club, and getting crunk. That's not what it's all about. If you wanna hear some hip hop people who are about the music check out Jurassic 5 or Saul Williams. They are true blue artists. Not all rap people just push buttons on a computer. It's much more complex than that. Take this for example. I've been studying music for 11 years now. I have mastered lots of instruments but when you get into turntableism it gets hard. Scratching is a hard concept. True they take samples from other songs but not always. Sometimes they have actual musicians that make up the songs for them. Most rap has a melody to it too. Just most of the artists that are hot do the same melody over and over. So it starts to sound the same. I'm not saying you should like rap or hip-hop. I just think your listening to the wrong stuff. You should be opened minded to the situation and search deeper. It's not all bad my friend.

That's complete B.S. Rappers work very very hard, mainly on two points that rockers don't even bother with:
1. Being rhythmical. They're using their voice as a rhythm rather than a melody. It takes just as much work/talent to be rhythmical as it does to be melodical.
2. To have something to say. Some of the lyrical content of mainstream pop and rock songs is laughable and, not to mention, repetitive. Rap music is poetry. It isn't four verse lines and then a repeated chorus which was most likely ripped off some rock song from the 60s. If you're copying other people in the hip hop world, you're through. You've got to be an original story teller. Rap songs are rife with literary techniques, from metaphors to similes to double entendes. Some rappers blow my mind with what they come up with in the constraints of a song. They're reading poetry musically, essentially.
On top of that, it's often very danceable.
Incidentally, the beat usually comes AFTER a song is written.

i play guitar, ukelele, mandolin, keyboard, and lead absolutely love rock and blues and i can appreciate rap - yeah its not as technically skilled but its a slice of some weird super rich black culture which you cant really get anywhere else - now if you want a **** genre look at R&B man all the songs sound the same - blah blah something about a sexy girl that left a guy for someone else or vice versa. Bollocks.

I think what made the original and older hip hop/rap great was that it was poetry of the struggles and hardships of the urban people. It was impressive how MCs could think up rhymes and battle each other using quick wit. Put a beat behind it and you could really start to feel what they were saying on a personal level.

The hip hop/rap of today is just crap that has been commercialized.

rap is talking to a beat and hiphop is a mixture of different sounds with some talking to a dance music. they work hard they sit there to make sure their sounds sound unique fun and interesting. i think just the basic boom boom boom of old rap songs are way gone. people today want more different sounds.
wats the difference between that and people singing ? peoples voice is an insrument and what they do with it has to be unique a great sound otherwise it wont sell no matter what it is.

What is so amazing, especially with Rap, is the fact it is called music and played on the radio. I am still amazed about that!!! It sucks and shows NO TALENT whatsoever!!!! Give me harmony, musical instruments, and a good beat and I'm happy. Needless to say, I don't listen to rap or hip hop. GOOD question!!!

That's just it, it's not great. It's a just a beat and a guy that can rhyme really fast. It's about drugs, alcohol, and sex (most of which is demeaning to women). It's a total waste of talent. Rock is SO much better!

The image of the girls and the "bling" is exiting to most people and they think that with this music, comes these things.
