from memory, first thing I remember that made the SE version was introducing us to the stuff Cameron had left out in order to make the movie fit the daily turnaround in cinemas.
First thing i remember was a moment after Ripley gets out of the hospital...She is sitting in a virtual park when Carter J Burke comes in and brings her news and a picture of the daughter Ripley left behind...now dead.
Then there was the scene on LV-426 showing the inner workings of the colony and the people on it, a conversation avbout two scientists going out to take a look at an anomaly suggested by the Company back on earth...then us meeting Newt, her brother, her mother and father...and much, much more.
For those of us who were Aliens fans...it was one of the best moments in the rerelease of a VHS casette. We loved the movie...and what we were getting was more good stuff that just fleshed out the movie...so that we felt that we were watching a whole new movie. I believe I got the European VHS which came on two casettes. Totally delicious. And yes...Pre-DVD.

It has been a while since I watched Aliens (special edition) but I do know that they had some scenes put back in.

What I remember most is 'Alien 3' (SE). It was like watching a total different film with all the missing scenes that they took out in the first place back in. It all made better sense.

I believe that if they had kept those scenes in the first place, then 'Alien 3' would perhaps have had a better review.

I still enjoy watching 'Alien 3' as that was fun to watch regardless of what others think! My favourite alien hybrid in that would have to be the cute doggy one. (coooee....doggy come here to mummy.)

P.S. Oh, the answer to your question.... I missed all that fuss over the SE version release - how ignorant of me!!

The Special Edition improves the film IMO. The way it shows what happened to Newt's parents as well as the scenes with the computerised guns in the corridors.
