Why is it that commercial vehicles like 18-wheelers have a bigger steering wheel than normal vehicles?

Originally large commercial trucks only came with manual steering. The larger steering wheel gave the driver extra leverage to turn the steering gear. Todays modern commercial trucks, and buses are usually equipped with power steering, but it is still possible to spec out the truck with manual steering. So rather than make two sized steering wheels, the one larger one is still used on both power, and non power steering trucks.

It gives the driver more leverage and thus better control on the vehicle. You don't need a big wheel on a passenger vehicle, because your vehicle is easier to control and you don't need all that leverage to horse it around.

But that 18-wheeler takes a lot more steering and that big wheel keeps the driver from wearing himself out steering.

I have the same problem as you. I drive a 2004 Impala and the steering wheel is huge. I always wanted a steering wheel cover for my wheel and I finally got one. At first I went to Auto-Zone and they let me try the covers on. They had some that fit but I didn't like them. Then I found one for $4 that I liked at Big Lots discount store and I somehow managed to get it on. It took me 5 minutes and I had to force it on. I like it because it has grips on it. My advice to you is to go to Auto-Zone or another car parts store and try various steering wheel covers on. At Auto-Zone and other car parts stores they make ones that fit and by that I mean you don't have to use extreme force to get them on. You could find one at a discount store you like and use force to get it on. It will fit really good, so make sure you like it. Another option is to get one from the local dealer. I know they will have ones that fit, but you will pay twice the money.

its because of the size of the car, like eighteen wheelers, they are big thats why the steering wheel becomes big also so that when you steer it, it will be easier, big steerings gives a lighter weight ones you try to turn the wheels.

Due to fact how much it takes to turn one those things go drive one and mount a 11 inch chain ring steering wheel on it and see if you can turn in time or turn corners without getting work out lol need more leverage for turning and quicker turn response.
