I'd like to recommend the twelve-volume paperback set "The Story of My Life" by Giovanni Giacomo Casanova published by a university press in the USA (I'm sorry I don't have information now, I'd tell you later). However, you might read the abridged hardcover version entitled "History of My Life" published by Alfred A. Knopf in the Everyman's Library series.

Erotic books will not damage your memory. You don't 'have' to read them, but if you do read them, they will naturally add to your general knowledge. Personally, I recommend them. But be sure to find ones that suit your taste.
