For UncleRico: you are right, with a very small difference, USA is a Nation, is a member of UN, signed Human Rights agreement. Al Quaida is a terroristic organization...

What kind of human rights can there be if you are held with no reason and are not availed council? I would, surely like to hear from the Red Cross on the news on a continual basis of their view on what is going on at Guantanamo Bay. If a person is a drug runner surely we can put him in prison once we have proved his guilt. Even Saddam was given his trial.I mean the great USA kicked the investigators out of Iraq (and they WERE doing a good job). I would like to know why Guantanamo Bay even exists. Who is our government? What are they doing?
Grow up and learn something Terrie. You've got the Internet obviously. Get off your butt and investigate. There's a lot of stuff here that you can investigate and learn from.
Terrie -- you have also said that the prisoners at GAt--- Bay are living better than they were in the Middle East or wherever- If we gave you a big screen TV would you like to live your life in front of it? with foreign propaganda pushed at you every day? Have some compassion!
Yes Molly it's an incredible pile of BS the Americans are giving us about Gua --- Bay. These people are NOT rapists or other piles of poo - they are people caught up innocently in the vortex of war or people disagreeing with America. And I sa America because no other western power has a Guantanamo Bay or similar illegal detention facility.
Why is the western world at war with the middle east? Religion my ***. Religion is the facilitator. Please excuse my spelling - its been a long night.
First off Uncle Rick ( u coniving littlr bugger) to make us out to be better than the enemy is the whole point. It is not our place to say "well they did this - or - they did that." It has to be we did this because it is humanitarian and proper!"
Who are we to say that this is wrong for but because you do it we can too. Can't you see the pile of poo you are sinking into?

I saw a very interesting story on Australian 60minutes that is what changed my mind about Guantanamo Bay the prisoners are locked up in a solitary cell for 23hrs and 40min they are allowed out for 20 min a day.Which would be fine if they had been charged with a crime but they havent and some have been there for over 5 yrs and what if they are innocent at least give them chance to defend themselves this is barbaric and the red cross are not anywhere in sight.Lock some Americans in there for 5 yrs and then tell me about human rights.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has an office right in the middle of the detention center and the staff has full access.

If they let them in, they would actually have proof of abuse.
I use to hear National Guards come back bragging about how they tormeted the prisoners there. THe things I heard isn't even mentioned in the news.
Plus the military wants to isolate the prisoner. If the prisoners sees Human rights advocates it might provide a glimmer of hope to the prisoners. That reduce the efficacy of the "Interogation"

Well, the obvious answer is because the Bush regime does not want outside experts to see what goes on there.
That may be because it would impair military security, or it may be because that allows the govt to hide unconstitutional abuses and/or to hide violations of federal law.
That's the problem with secret government activities -- we can only take there word whether they are following the law or not.

What exactly is a human rights expert? Is that a credential program, a degree of some sort, or a title? I would think that most humans could do this job. I mean what are the human rights? Food, clothes, shelter, religious practice (saving the whole beheading thing), sleep, etc. - what more do criminals get to have? I am thinking that these "detainees" have more comforts at Getmo than they had at home!

The army wants to control it's PR and since guantanamo and human rights don't go hand in hand, then you can imagine what damage letting in a human rights expert would do to the base and US army as a whole.

No one allowed in except the military. If HR were allowed in, they would be so shocked......just imagine what is going on behind those walls. America will have a lot to answer for in the future

The red cross has people there ALL THE TIME...they are human rights experts, right? :-)
You got some biased material...I am totally against the war and cant stand the shrub in office, but I do know that the red cross has access to gitmo regularly.
the people who answered b4 me obviously don't know this either. here is the deal can we liberals, or anti war folks, or whatever your title is, can we just please be smart...it is the ones who ask question b4 researching them that make the rest of us look silly and uneducated...
See this article...headline "US denies UN access to Guantanamo, keeps Red Cross : Rumsfeld maintains Red Cross's exclusive access to prison" Nov 1, 2005

Or see this one...headline "Red Cross had full access to Cuba detainees"

I don't need to keep going, you can educate your self if you like, good luck and remember to remain objective and use a critical eye with ALL media sources...
Side note: the US never ratified the un convention on human rights...so we have not agreed to live by it in times of peace or in times of war...funny thing huh?
and why all the thumbs down for this answer?? I mean I actually cited articles and shed some light on the situation...oh is it that I asked you to be educated??!! So sorry for demanding so much of my fellow american!
