I knew this girl who was so eager to meet people with connections. She would even neglect her own solid friends to converse/date people with "the upper hand." She would go to events with the intent of meeting newer people to extend her network. What incites this type of behavior?

I think it's a question of instinct. I think we have the instinct of leading and the instinct to search for / choose a leader. This builds a social informal pyramid. For some of us the instinct of leading is stronger. Such people try to enlarge the network of people around them. Those who avoid taking responsibilities generally choose leaders and follow them. Those who like taking responsibilities sooner or later find people ready to follow them and become social climbers.

The wish to become more popular maybe, the need of being noticed by well positioned people, the desire of having a life among the rich and famous so she could become part of that world some day. Is that too less? I doubt she neglects her friends and I doubt she will leave her friends behind if her social status is higher than now. If she succeeds in reaching where she wishes for, all her friends will come with her sooner or later, it's the network that helps.
