Without French intervention, the Revolutionary War would certainly have dragged on a lot longer than it did, and might have ended with a short-term British victory.

The greatest French contribution to the American cause (apart, maybe, from moral support) was that the French gained at least temporary naval superiority off America's coast, thereby preventing the British from moving troops by sea, and assuring Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown.

If the French (and most other European countries) had not supported the Colonies against Britain, the British would have been free to concentrate all of their military resources against the Americans. Even with so much help from France and others, the Revolutionary War was a close contest. So I suspect that the British would have eventually crushed this rebellion.

But any British victory would not have lasted for long without a complete change of policies from London, involving a much greater measure of self-government for the Colonies. America was simply too populous, too economically powerful, and too full of promise, to remain subject to rule from Britain. Within a generation (perhaps taking advantage of Britain's involvement in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars) a second rebellion would have broken out in the Colonies. Independence was only a matter of time and timing.

I concur with the prevalent train of thought.

It is most likely that the war would have dragged on. Unless the British could draw the continental army into a deceive defeat.

Both the American and British determination for the war was waning. Parliament was tired of it and so was the colonies.

The founding fathers had staked their fortunes on this gamble and as much as they wanted to seek a resolution to the conflict they knew that that would be the end of there fortunes. I doubt that Washington or Jefferson would have been allowed to return to their homes and plantation in tact.

There was a very strong reconciliation attempt, the King and Parliament were willing to grant the colonials almost everything they wanted except full Independence, a forebear of the commonwealth concept.

I would surmise that the colonies would have their own Parliament and take a number of seats in the British Parliament and have they own prime minister. A limited autonomy, with even the founding fathers being offered seats in order to secure there loyalty.

I live a few minutes from Yorktown the last battle of the Revolution. Without the French help the continental army would not have done very well. They supplied the army, blockaded the English fleet at Yorktown and in general trained the army. You don't know how much it kills me to say this, but there is a good chance the English would have killed the continental army.

If France didn't help, I think:

General Washington would have kept fighting a guerrilla war and defeated the moral of the Brits slowly. Jefferson wouldn't have been so eager to help during the french revolution and wouldn't have been smack talking Pres. Adams so Adams maybe could've had a second term and maybe stopping the party feuds that Washington frowned upon. Changing America as we know it.

If the French never came, the Americans would probably have been beaten by the British who would then have probably severely punished the colonies. The colonies may have eventually gained their freedom, but the battle for their freedom may have lasted much longer than it did.

There was no French intervention. France agreed to recognize the new government if the colonies were successful.
