How many episodes are there per season for weekly shows such as Heroes, Battlestar Gallactica, etc? Is the amount standard for network tv and for cable networks like HBO?

First seasons will tend to be 13 or 14 episodes, if the show's successful, the studio may opt to order more episodes for that season, or leave it as is. Later seasons tend to run about 23 eps. Nothings standard though, because money is involved.

'Back in the day' (for me that's 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's) I've seen several over the air broad-cast television series have 20+ episodes per season. Now a lot of cable based shows have from 10-16 episodes per season. "Weeds" started with 10 then progressed up to 15. "Breaking Bad had 16 and less per season. "Hell's Kitchen" and "Master Chef" can have about just over 20 per season (most reality series will have weekly viewership. Look at "American Idol". How many episodes do shows like that get per season? More than 20, I'm sure.
Some say that this trend is due to there is more to watch for viewing these days (even YouTube and cable TV) so television series seasons are short.
