Notepad is really all you need. MySpace layouts, like any other web site, are created with HTML.

There is a number of tools that are much more sophisticated than Notepad - Dreamweaver (http://www.adobe.com/dreamweaver ) and NVU (http://www.nvu.com/ ) are generally the most popular. Dreamweaver is definitely the best, but NVU is free.

A layout generator allows you to build your layout from fonts, font colors, background, sizes etc. All you need to do is to fill out the generator and after that it gives you a long code and you just copy and paste that code into your profile under the "about me" section.
