No this is normal for newborns. It dosent mean he is angry or in pain. Congrats on the baby tho!

Infants clench their fists by instinct, so as to hold onto whatever they can, even if there's nothing there. It's even part of the first few minutes test of your baby after it's born; they will clench their fists around a finger strongly enough to be lifted partially from a prone position.

I would call and discuss any constipation in a 6 week old with the pediatrician. Is he formula fed and that is why he is constipated? There is a point where breast fed babies intestines will mature enough to fully process the milk and it is common for a breast fed baby to go days (up to 10) without a bowel movement only to have everything perfectly normal. Sugar causes babies to have diarrhea and that is probably why her remedy works, but I wouldn't try it without talking to the doctor first. Chamomile is an herbal remedy (although obviously safe it does cause pre-term labor in pregnant women and is commonly used to help people relax and sleep)and herbal remedies are not monitored by any agency. They haven't been tested for safety or effectiveness. My baby is the last person on earth I would want to be a guinea pig! My MIL used to give her kids paragoric (opium) when they were cranky! Old wives remedies can be scary!

If he's not distressed when he's doing that it's just part of his development being able to control his hands. You might want to see if he'll grasp objects if he can clench his fists to further his development.
A really good source of information is http://www.babycentre.co.uk/

No its normal for young baby's to have their hands in a fist almost constantly. He will let u know when he is angry or stressed, as u get to know him better u will also be able to read his body language and his different cry's so u will no when hes hungry, got a dirty nappy or whatever, Enjoy your son. Unclenched hands does not mean your baby is relaxed!!
it is just part of thier development

My son is 5mths old and his hands are still clenched like that no matter what even when it is in his mouth. If he has anything in his hands then it wont be like that, but its just something babies do because they dont know what to do with their hands...Enjoy the baby now because time goes by so fast and it is hard to believe that they were ever that small..Congrats on the baby :)

This is very normal. He will start opening his hands after about 2 or 3 months. Mine did that. They are used to being like that - folded legs and arms with fists as they use to be inside us like that.

Not at all, it's just how babies hold their hands. My 10 week old still has her fists clenched most of the time. When they are unclenched, your baby is relaxed :D
