A Disk Defragmenter comes with Windows.
Go to the Start Menu and choose Programs
Go to Accessories and choose System Tools
Then choose Disk Defragmenter.
In the next dialogue box that appears, choose the drive you wish to defragment (usually C:)
It takes a while. It depends on the size of the disk and the amount of fragmentation. It checks the hard disk for errors and then defragments.
Defragment every two months or so. If you frequently add and delete files, you should do it more often. Sometimes programs running in the background, such as anti-virus programs, even screensavers, can interfere with the defragmenter completing its job. If this is the case, you need to make sure all programs running in the background are shut down before starting the defragmenter.

Lady, either purchase a Defrag software package or down load one!
Before starting you should delete all temporary files. The system does not need them so why move and copy them while defragging the hard drive? Temp files have the letters TMP after the period - Example Ilikeyou.TMP
Use the search *.TMP and delete all of those files that you can.
Then start your defrag program.
Do it off line, because on line takes away the effectiveness of the defrag. While on line you create more temp files!
When you save/write a file, the system writes it in parts all over the drive. This reduces available drive space for the system to work with.
When you defrag, the system rewrites the file on one location. This clears up space on the hard drive. You should defrag monthly!

With many computers, this utility is built in. If you have a Windows XP machine, double-click:
Programs » Accessories » System Tools » Disk Defragmenter
And just follow instructions. Sometimes this can take hours and hours. Sometimes it's quick.
No, it does not matter if you're online or not.

GO TO START THEN CLICK ON CONTROL PANEL - THEN CLICK ON PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE - AND THEN CLICK ON DEFRAGMENT - THIS SHOULD BE DONE AT LEAST 1X / MONTH OR MORE FREQUENT DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU USE YOUR COMPUTER. YOU SHOULD ALSO DO A DISC CLEAN UP REGULARLY TO GET RID OF NON ESSENTIAL TEMPORARY FILES. IF U PERFORM BOTH OF THE ABOVE REGULARLY YOUR COMPUTER WILL RUN MORE EFFICIENTLY.
