Pretty much he was an unknown. Unless you remembered him from menuedo
Remember most "pop" stations do not play foreign music, even if it is really GOOD music to dance to.
because his music was in spanish, it would only get played by the spanish music stations. Which unfortunately are not listened to by many in mainstream america.
So this relatively unknown singer comes on in the grammies in 1999, and he ROCKS the HOUSE. Awesome performance, adn then BAM! household name.
so yes.

No that's not true. Ricky Martin has been around for a very long time. Begining in Puerto Rico and leading the way in other Latin American countries, Mexico, I'm sure that his music went around and eventually reaching the US way before 99. I first heard of Ricky Martin when he first started and I live here in the US, as well as friends, family who first heard of him here in the US.

I remember "like a bullet to the brain" tune before 99. He was all over TV and magazines participating in an obvious media promo blitz. Reminded me of ABBA's $50 million ad campaign in the 70s to take over America. ABBA came over and had to cancel many concert tour stops. I could have bought a whole box of ABBA albums from a salvage warehouse for $5. Now I wished I had. But, as you get older, you learn what is hype and what is art.
