Hi Pallavi,
It depends on what your usage is and what your budgets are

Dual Cores are two Pentium 4 chips (of slightly lower speeds) put together - this gives better multitasking capabilities with lower power consumption and better CPU utilization
Intel has Pentium Ds in this bracket and AMD has Athlon 64 X2 in this segment. Personally, I'd recommend the latter.

Its always advisable to look at a (minimum) 3 year horizon while purchasing a PC.
SO if you look at it being capable of handling applications in the next 2 years, i'd recommend atleast a dual core (Intel's pentium D or AMDs Athlon 64 X2)

If you play more of games and watch movies or multi-task - then the best is Core2Duo - but the minimum price for the CPU of the Core 2 Duo range (E4300) would be around 9K (Indian rupees) and a good motherboard would cost you around 3.5K

I personally feel Athlon 64 X2 4200+ should do you good, but if you let me know the usage and budget I'll be able to give you better advice.

Cheers!

A Pentium 4 is a generic dual core (hyper-threading)
A Pentium D is a true dual core
Pentium D is better.
Pentium Core2Duo is even better.

Pentium D is the latest and best. But AMD latest processors are faster than Pentium but at high loads AMD processors are not fine.Pentium processors best for all types of loads.

right now the Intel center Duo 2 approaches are the featest in the CPU classification out doing the AMD AM2's. The fastest Intel center Duo you'll get is the Intel center Duo severe which at present is the E6800 operating at 2.93GHz Atm the Intel center Duo 2 is the fastest Intel CPU in the middle Duo 2 variety and so the Intel center Duo 2 is at a more beneficial useful to the only Cores which have 2 cores in spite of the undeniable fact that they have got Hyperthreading ability there's a hyperthical 2d CPU.
