This, is a play on the fact that every child needs a father and a mother... Now even though invention is not really a child, the fact that is has a mother must mean that it has a father... I'm just asking... no need for you to answer if you don't understand the question...

I say the father of invention has to be ingenuity. Sure, you have a need, but you can't conceive a way to meet that need unless you inject a bit of creative thinking and problem solving into that need...I know, play on words there, too, but think about it!

You can ponder all you want about a need you have but if you don't think of a solution for meeting it, you're nowhere closer to meeting it then when you first thought of it.

Good concept for a question, one of the more interesting ones I've seen today!

Normally when a comparison is made between two things, the discussion is restricted to the description of the particular aspect or attribute compared and nothing beyond...

Someone is sweet as honey, because (s)he has quick wits and does not get annoyed over petty things etc.. the comparison ends with the feeling of pleasant experience indicated by the word honey... there is no other comparable features between the honey and the person, normally...!

However since you had jovially provoked people to find a further relationship between the invention and its parents.. one may attempt... say, be saying that the father would be "effort"...

For, Thomas Alva Edison had said that the inventions are the result of "10% inspiration and 90% perspiration".. A person driven by the necessity to find something out, has to develop an inspiraion and then work toward that intutive clue tirelessly.. modifying it now and then if needed... till a desired output is achieved..

Or, one may say that "necessity" and "inspiration" beget invention... Because, without an inspiration, one can not work in a random direction... Like that you can land upon quite a few probable "father's for the baby of "invention"..!

If necessity is the mother of invention, the father is certainly profit.
