Poison (kills the root system and loosens its hold in the soil), dynamite (obliterates the roots and the stump - noisy but effective), digging (very labor intensive), grinding (also noisy but effective), and a crane/hoist/drag (literally tears the stump out) - some people use a combination of methods. The environmentally friendly method would be to let loose a herd of hungry gophers, but they do not do precision work and may be difficult to contain.

My two favorites are fire and mushrooms. The first, for you pyros, involves drilling a dozen or so 1/2"x6" holes on the face of the stump and filling half way with salt peter (drug store) or ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Then fill the holes with water once a day for a week, the nitrates will dissolve and soak into the wood. Then let your stump dry out for another week and use lighter fluid to start it on fire. After the initial flame dies down your stump may smolder for another week, be patient and you will be rewarded with a nice hole instead of a stump. The second also involves drilling holes, this time 3/8"x1 1/4". Purchase a mushroom kit from www.fungiperfecti.com, follow the directions which involves filling your holes with dowels impregnated with mushroom mycelium. Your stump will produce delicious mushrooms for several years until your stump is reduced to compost. RScott

If you're not in a hurry, drop a old tire on it to act as a wall around it and fill it with earth. If you need it taller, add a second tire on top and fill that as well, them plant some flowers.
After awhile, the damp earth will rot the stump into nothing.

My husband cuts a criss cross pattern, a few inches deep, in the stump with the chain saw and then we cover it with rock salt/water softener salt to eat the stump away. Pretty effective.

use them for something ,
level the tops and put a flower pot on top
plant vines on it if they are tall
and the wood will rot in a year
pull them out with a tractor
axe them to bits and cut well into the ground dig all around it (this is a lot of work )
easier to go with the flow and use them for something that is what i do.
