It seems as though nobody supports him: He was brought in under questionable conditions: The NHL market is falling apart: Two Canadian teams were uprooted to new homes in the US: He put the All Star game on during the week to avoid competetion and nobody watched???: He's an Ivy league brat who worked for the NBA.

Why can't we get rid of this guy and bring in some fresh ideas. It's like he's Karl Rove or some sort of untouchable!

A lot of people above me nailed it, he has a job because the OWNERS support him, and:

1. The Owners are Greedy

2. The Owners don't know Hockey

3. The Owners, particularly in the case of the New York Rangers, gave obnoxious contracts to players of their own free will, then cried to Bettman they were not making money.

4.This caused work stoppages and the OWNERS (Beginning to see a pattern here???) decided to be hard-headed and do what was best for their pocketbooks, not the sport and the fans.

5. Like keep tinkering with the game because after all, if we had a work stoppage, the GAME had a problem, right??? I mean it couldn't be the OWNERS?

One "special" group DOES support him, the OWNERS. And as long as this continues he WILL have a job. Somewhat like a Monarch in a Democracy.

First, to echo previous comments, the NHL is a business and is making money as a whole. More money than it ever has so the owners are quite pleased with that aspect. Until this changes...which means until the average fan stops paying them...he will be seen as a viable commissioner.

Second, your comment on the All-Star Game...has anyone ever watched? Besides, it used to be during the week back in the 1980s and only moved to weekends when Bettman came on board. I don't know the logistics of the move, but this year was more a return to where it was before.

As for his support, I do agree that it is dwindling. The league is going to, sooner or later, have to deal with the lack of support in the Southern markets...the lack of support in two of the original six markets...and the fact that the Canadian fans will get tired of the league bowing to American television pressures. Say what you will about the fans, but the NHL's strongest fan base is Canada...the day they remember that will be very interesting.

Because we the fans don't pick the Commish. We should either probably. The NHL is a business and that is how Bettman runs it. Might not like it but that is how it goes. The owners think he is doing a good job and he is making them money, that is what really counts. If you hate him so much why support the league? If we all REALLY wanted him out we would need to boycott the league and make sure the owners know why.

cause he does mostly what hes told by the bigger bosses the owners. yes he has changed some rules throughout the years on his own but the owners will not fire him cause he does what he is told to do. and plus he just got a salary cap which the owners clearly wanted. so he saved his job as Commish for a few more years.

i know it sucks, look at the NHL before he joined the NHL had way better ratings then the NBA and was a close second to the MLB cause in the earlier 90's the MLB was losing lots a fans. i would like to see him gone also but hes doing the jobs his bosses are telling him to do.

First of all the brand of hockey we know and love is falling apart but the league is more profitable that ever and on top of that he got a cap instated for the owners so they love him and the board loves him for lining their pockets, but fans are starting to get loud about how boring he is making it and I believe he will start catering more to what the fans want soon.

Because the greedy corporate trash that owns the teams these days doesn't care about our game. they just pocket the profits and look the other way; clearcut conflict of interest with Bettman; nobody's got the b***s to speak up and fight.

I agree with you. It's time to say goodbye to Bettman.I agree with someone in another answer who suggested Brian Burke as a Commisoner.Or someone else of his calibre who would be cognizant of the nuts and bolts of the NHL and its traditions, as well as able to market successfully and move it into a more dominant postion in the sports marketplace.

I totally agree with you!
I think he is just not competent for the job. And what's up with teams from same division palying 8 games to each-other in regular season?!!I don't like it.
Hopefully he will be replaced in the near future!

How would you feel if the people in your office with different ideas than yours, wrote to the world that you should be thrown out of your job? That YOU should not be allowed to work!

Gary Bettman still has his job because he still makes money.
If he didn't he wouldnt have a job, and hockey fans would rejoyce.
