My bins have been emptied fortnightly for a couple of years now. It is horrendous! I have a green box which I put all cardboard packaging in, this cuts down a bit of the rubbish. But sometimes, I am forced to take some of my rubbish to our local tip. I have noticed that a lot of people do tip their rubbish elsewhere. And some people put their leftover foodstuffs in a carrier bag and take them to the local street bins in desperation, otherwise their bins would get very smelly, particularly in summer. I feel sorry for the mums who have to dispose of soiled nappies!
It is outrageous! It begs the question: What are we paying our council taxes for?

Had our (rubbish) bin emptied fortnightly for years with our Green bin being collected in the alternate week. Can't see a problem with this, you would only get flies, rats, etc if your neighbours are particularly squalid and can't manage the simple task of putting their rubbish in the bin and closing the lid. And if recyclables are sorted into the green bin (not difficult or time consuming) you will not get to a point where the waste bin is overfull.

My rubbish is emptied once a week and the recycling once a fortnight. Although for the amount of rubbish I produce I don't think I'd mind if mine was every two weeks. But I agree though, you will get fly tipping etc. It's about time the government did something about the landfills, perhaps burning the rubbish to make energy but then I guess, they will say it'll add to the co2!

we have been using the two bin system for about a year now. we have just gone onto a three bin system black, brown and green wheelie bins in the brown bin tins, paper, plastic and glass bottles are emptied one week along with the a black bin in which you put general waste and in the third bin a green one garden waste and cardboard is emptied the other.great idea although the black bin smells a bit in the summer but if you tie up the general waste bags its OK. during the winter you don't get much in the green bin. on average i do fill every bin within the two week cycle. the roads are not strewn with rubbish it does actually look quite neat with all the bins lined up ready for the collection lorries.

We are once a week, but there are rumours of the fortnightly empty coming. I am lucky that most of the time I would manage it but if not then I guess it would be a trip to the local tip as and when it was needed. Can you not ask for another bin? I have 2 for my garden rubbish, I just phoned and told them that one bin was not enough and a few days later I was brought another one.

I heard this nonsense as well, i heard some overpaid mp say that people should use basic 'bin hygiene'..what the hell is that all about...bins and hygiene are two words that should not go together.
I agree that this stupid idea will lead to more vermin and possibly more fly tipping.
Also, if rubbish is going to be collected every two weeks then surely every household should be entitled to a reduction in there council tax, as this is what part of this tax covers.

I live in Norfilk where our bins have been epmtied on alternate weeks for a couple of years now. There have been no real problems really, however in the summer heat they STINK.
On the other hand I lived and worked in ~Basel for several months, where rubish was collected twice a week.
So if the Swiss can do it why can't we, or could it be that they can do it because the Swiss wont let the officials get away with the same Crap the Brits put up with.

In Kent fornightly collections have been about for more than a year now and seems to work fine.

Some useful tips for recycling

(1) make sure that your recycling bag only has recyclable items in it. The council will refuse to take it if it has non-recyclables in it. (you will also need to check your council's rules on recycling plastic as Kent county council have decided that they can only recycle plastic with 1,2,4,5 in a triangle stamped to the bottom of it.). Anything else they refuse to take.

(2) round up all your glass and visit your local recycling banks regularly.

(3) Get a compost container for your garden and fill it with vegetable peelings and earthworms.

(4) sounds a bit cheeky I know but if your neighbour(s) has put their bin out only half full and you have more than a full bin on bin day, fill their bin up as well!

It also depends on what your council are giving you to recycle with. I have recently moved from Kent to Lancashire. In Kent we were given rolls of clear sacks and told to put out as many as you want as long as they're filled with the right stuff. Here in Lancashire you've got something a little bigger than a washing up bowl to do your recycling with but the bins are emptied weekly. If you do not think that this is adequate, complain about it!

Anyone who has a problem complying with the new regulations that basically require you to recycle 50% of your waste can contact their local council and tell them why then they can organise either a second landfill bin or a weekly collection for you. If you are a household of six or more adults or if you have children under a certain age I think they will do it.

Thanks you just reminded me, my bin needs to go out now!!
Yeah ours is emptied once a fortnight, has been for the last year or so, its a pain.
I end up going to the tip at least once a week with more rubbish. We have crap recycling facilities in our area so we do generate more rubbish.

The council tried emptying the bins once a fortnight and when summer came the bins were putrid, needless to say they went back to the once a week system.
