It seems everyday I hear a story about some (insert PC word for moron) who blames others for their own stupidity e.g:

The man who got drunk at a party, started dancing on the glass table, fell through, then sued his mate for damages.

The woman who thinks McDonalds is to blame for her obese 4 year old.

The woman who sued an insurance company for not giving her a new car when the other one was vandalised and she didn't have insurance.

The scary thing is they all won...

In the end they might have won (as you stated)

but we as a society have lost much more.

These stupid lawsuits are only going to come back and haunt

us.

In such a world where the science if advertising/marketing (and it is a serious science no game) is strongly affecting people's psychology to influence their choices, it becomes very difficult to decide whom to blame. Do you blame Mcdonalds for marketing itself as healthy food or those poor less informed individuals (whom are a majority) who buy into this false image. It is also very hard to decide do you blame a 30 year old cancer patient who started smoking when she/he were 16 because cigarette advertisements strongly influenced them or do you blame Marlboro?. If you use false images to market unhealthy behaviors for economic gain then again can you decide whom to blame?

There are exceptions for every case and not all refusals to accept consequences of ones own actions are falling in the category given above as your examples clearly states. However, you can also argue that the above category is so omnipotent that it promotes a culture of blaming others in the society and the vicious circle goes on. Chaos has a tendency to increase and spread!

Unless we are sitting in the courtroom hearing the case, most of the time we only hear half of the story... Lawyers are good at pointing out a technicalities, and courts go by the book, i.e., an owner is liable for injuries that occurred on their property, insurance covers this and pays, etc....

I agree with the principle, but I'd need case citations on the others, as, despite being an attorney, I'm not familiar with any of those cases. Most of the rediculouse cases you hear of have more to them then the news reports or they are thrown out or reduced on appeal. The system is bad, but it is not that bad and some of the fixes are worse.

Whatever we do we have to reap the results willy nilly. The people might have been exonerated in the court, but they can not escape the reactions or results somewhere sometime. Generally people do not owe their mistakes due to Ego or Fear. But if you openly accept your misdeeds and repented for it in retribution, you will have free consciousness rather than a guilty one. Personally we know we have erred. Even if we escape punishment, our conscious won't leave us. nagarajan.

As long as one person can get over dozens will have to try.

A murder can be released because he confesses before he is read his rights. Why should anyone be accountable?
