Your tank really is way too small, even for one fish. And gold fish do not die off quickly. Most live an average of around 20 years. Also, they do not stop growing to the size of their tank, they continue to grow.

Gold fish are cold water fish and require not only 1 sq. foot of surface area (water) per inch of fish, but also pleanty of dissolved oxygen, Air stones do nothing to add this to your tank, only filters, by water movement. (Filters, powerheads, fountains waterfalls waves etc.)

You should never do a 100% water change in any tank. This damages your biofilter that your tank has worked so hard to create. 25% max.

Remember gold fish are cold water and no heater is required or needed in the tank.

It is always a good idea to feed your fish a variety of foods along with your flake or pellets, such as cucumbers, peas, lettuce oranges.

In such a small tank you must be careful not to overfeed.

Also, I realize you are in a smaller place, but I would suggest to move your fish to atleast a 10 gallon tank. Depending on the fish you have, they could grow as large as 12 inches. The sales man more than likely figured your fish would die off before they started getting too large for your tank. (That is a real shame)

The pet store sales person wasn't as concerned with the fish due to new fishkeepers don't and won't know why their fish died. He just made his sale and off you go.

Cleaning your tank is no different. You still should use a gravel siphone and remove no more than 25% of the water replacing it with fresh clean water using a good water conditioner/dechlor. You really don't need anything else.

For the health of your fish really, move them to a larger tank in the near future.

A bowl isn't ok for a goldfish. Fancy goldfish can improve as much as one million foot long, and Comet goldfish can improve as much as two ft long. a posh Goldfish could be housed in a 10 gallon tank as juveniles, and 20 whilst they are adults. Comets could be un a fifteen whilst they are juveniles, and fifty 5+ whilst they are adults. the only real place for a Comet is in an particularly great pond. understand that those figures are for ONE goldfish. it is no longer undesirable for a goldfish to be in a bathing room, yet whilst the tank has no lid, then it ought to reason an issue. Hairspray, cleansing soap, and different bathing room chemical components ought to get into the tank and poison the fish. in case you have a good-installation lid, then you definately ought to in all probability escape with conserving it in the bathing room, in case you fed it frequently and altered 25% of the water month-to-month. ~ZTM

You really need a 30 gallon tank for two goldfish. Goldfish do get big. They will never outgrow the tank, but two goldfish need a lot of room to grow. I used to keep three fancy goldfish in a 50 gallon tank. I think goldfish make great pets. They are much more docile than most fish. They don't fight, and they seem to be more responsive to humans.

The only reason that he told you that they will not grow much is because most goldfish die off fast, however if they are well taken care of then they can live for years of not a decade or so and get several inches long.

By 10L I assume it means 10 Litres, not gallons?

10 litres really is too small for goldfish, but seeing as you already have them, there are things that can help the situation. (And that said, I had a goldfish live happily in a 15-litre tank for over 7 years.)
Filter the tank, and monitor the ammonia levels very closely. For the first week, test the water ever day. Do as many 20% water changes as necessary to keep the ammonia at safe levels. (0ppm is best, but anything under 0.02ppm won’t harm goldfish.)

Talk to your pet shop about water conditioner, and mineral salts. Get them to run a complete set of tests on the tank water to see what areas need attention.

Add a live plant to the tank, and ask the pet shop if they have anything to help keep the ammonia down. (I have a ball full of charcoaly stuff that absorbs ammonia.)

Mix your fish’s diet. I feed my fish a small amount of vegetable based food in the morning (as much as they can eat in 15 seconds) and then at night I feed them a small amount of meat based food.
Once a week I replace their nightly feed with a cooked, skinned pea. The peas help to “clean them out,” and help keep their colours nice and vivid.
The fish also seem to enjoy swimming around with a whole pea jammed in their mouth… lol.

Tank cleaning really depends on what’s happening in your tank. If the tank is filtered, and the ammonia levels are staying nice and low, you should be right doing a 20% water change every week. If you get a siphon/gravel vacuum you’ll take a lot of the waste out with the water.
(Siphons rule. I honestly don’t know how I got by without one. Mine was around $12, and seriously it was the best $12 I ever spent. I cut my tank cleaning time down from 30minutes to around 5.)

I don’t like 100% water changes, because they stress the fish out and can destroy the good bacteria in the tank. But if one is necessary, take you fish out of the water in jugs, or cups. That way you won’t hurt them in the net, and they won’t get quite as stressed because they won’t be out of the water at all.

Good luck :-)

Well, 10 gallons isn't a lot. If your goldfish survive they can reach a length of a foot!!! Yes, twelve inches. Maybe you can try something smaller, like guppies, or a betta.

They only grow so much by the size of their tank, the bigger the tank the bigger the fish, I wouldn't worry to much about how big they get, but make sure when you change their water that you get chlorine remover to remove the chlorine the water company puts in our drinking water that helps us but will defineately kill your fish, which is usually kills fish because people don't check these things out! Chlorine remover removes the chlorine that will kill your fish, also if you have a 10 gallon tank this is perfect for 2 gold fish, also don't listen to that one answer on your list about guppies they multiply like crazy, when the moma guppy has babies they usually have hundreds of them and they will eat most of them also! Just to also help you out try to purchase a outside filter sytem that will hang on the side of your 10 gallon tank this will keep the water pretty clean and you won't have to change the water for a long, long time!!!And your fish will also be healthier & live for a long time! Good Luck & Take Care. The outside filter isn't that exspensive either!

By feeding your fish a maintenance food and not rich foods, plus feeding lightly (not stuffing them), you can keep the growth down. Regular water changes will halp keep them healthy as well. Feed a food high in plant material; they also like treats of Peas (you can chop them up for little guys.) if they outgrow it, you can trade them in and get fancy guppies or something like that instead.
