Pregnant Macrobid UTI Pregnancy Antibiotics

2007-03-15 19:38:57 · 5 answers · asked by Anonymous in Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnancy

I am now 27 weeks pregnant. It is majorly stressing me out. I don't like taking any kind of meds while I am pregnant. I only drink water, nothing else. The doc said it was a UTI but I have no burning or anything when urinating. I don't even know where a Urologist is in my area. I am on medicaid and it is too late to switch doctors. I have tried talking to them about this but nothing is getting done.

Yes it is safe.

I see a lot of women are questioning why the returning UTIs.There is very good reason this is happening. Pregnant women get whats called ureteral dilatation. (Its because progesterone causes blood vessels to relax to cater to the amount of blood flow to the body.)
This- along with increased bladder volume and decreased bladder tone can lead to glycosuria. This- is what allows bacteria to grow selectively. It's not uncommon, and it happens to some women more then others.

In english now- basically, where you go pee from dialates a bit more (opens) and so when you are done going pee- a little bit draws back up into you. The hormones in pregnancy then enable strains of bacteria to grow- hence causing a urinary tract infection. It doesnt mean you aren't wiping well enough- doesn't mean you are doing something bad... it just happens to some women.

Don't worry. The macrobid is safe and will help clear you up. And don't worry, after the baby and hormones leave your body- you will return to normal soon thereafter!

Goooooood luck!

How long pregnant and have you had 8 uti's during that time?
Please go see another doctor and try to find the cause of this!
Are you drinking enough fluids? Cranberry juice helps also.
If youre not drinking enough clear fluids to flush your body...that could be part of your cause. also, your growing baby is a concern for taking so many antibiotics and possibly lack of fluids. Find the cause and prevention...the cure is one thing, but if you can alleviate further uti's it would be better for you and your child. get a second opinion! have a safe pregnancy. peace

macrobid is safe to take during pregnancy. it was perscribed for me at 22 weeks for a uti and i read the description wal-greens gives with meds....since its an antibiotic taking so much might build up a resistance. if your doctor wants you on it then you are more likely safe taking it for whatever reason.

deffinetly see a urologist for further information and what you can do to take care of your problem. If you need to take medication, think about it this way...it is better to be on the medication than be sick, being sick can cause the baby more trauma.
take care
