Female, 20, new to acting, need a one-minute monologue ASAP. I am really stressed out, I have so much other school work to do, so I guess I am feeling desperate about this!

My instructor was pretty general with topics and sources of where to get them from (she said no shakespeare though ??), just as long as they are relevant to my age/sex. Also any tips on how to be less nervous when I actually do the monologue would be awesome. Thanks SO much!! =)

check out monologuearchive.com or take a trip to a store that sells plays like Samuel French in LA. If you find a good play you can find a good monologue. If you want dramatic try The Laramie Project (most are pretty short). If you want Comedic try Laughing WIld or a Girl's Guide to Chaos.

Use a subject you like a lot, your favorite hobby, pet, or event. Then tell the story like you were talking to your best friend -slang and all. Put in all the details you would tell your friend, and laugh at the spots you would laugh at with your friend.
To reduce nervousness, remember you want to tell all these new friends all about this, too. Look a few in the eye. Relax your body before you go on. Volunteer to be first, the longer you wait, the more time you have to doubt yourself and get nervous. Afterwards, you can sit back, relaxed, and take notes on the successes and failures of everyone else, instead of the other way around.
Do 3 cleansing breaths just before you start. Relax your body, breathe in through your nose, hold it 10 seconds (approximately) then let it out slowly. Repete. Have fun.

As for how to be less nervous, just go through it a few times and get comfortable with it. You can try whatever mental trick works, but the one that always works for me is I just look at the people around me and think "Oh man, I am just gonna rock your world."

Either that or take a shot of Bacardi before class. :P
