A great place to research the legitimacy of contests, agents, publishers, and more is at Preditors and Editors:

The contests section has a huge list which includes information like prizes and entry fees, so take a look!

Poets & Writers Magazine always has a whole section on open poetry contests. It comes out every other month and you should be able to find it at your bookstore or library.

It's not exactly a contest but depending on where you go to school there may be a literary magazine you can submit to within the school. It's considered publishing so you can say "I'm a published poet" if they print your work. Even if you don't necessarily attend the school, they may allow you to submit for consideration.
